How to choose the right guitar? Interview with Yeremya Malatchanyan, guitar teacher of Sound Lab music school.
– Yerem, greetings.
Today we want to talk to you about how to choose the right guitar, what to be guided by and what to pay attention to.
And so, where to start?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
Hello to you. It is quite an important topic. First of all, you need to clearly understand what purpose the instrument will serve, whether you are a beginner and want to get one for amateur level or for professional performances. It depends on all this, for example, the type of instrument: acoustic, classical or electric guitar.
– And what is the main difference between acoustic, classical and electric guitar?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
For example, a classical guitar has nylon strings, which are ideal for beginners because the strings are softer and easier on the fingers. An acoustic guitar typically has metal strings that produce a bright, resonant sound often used in pop and rock music. An electric guitar requires an amplifier and is more suitable for those who want to play modern music, especially in genres such as rock, blues and jazz.
– Is there a difference between children’s and adults’ guitars?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
Yes there is, because the size of the guitar is very important. There are smaller versions of guitars for children: 4/4, 4/3, 4/2, which are more suitable for small hands. Larger guitars are best suited for adults, but the comfort of the instrument, body size, and neck width should also be considered. Therefore, this is a matter of a little individual approach.
– What should you pay attention to when choosing a guitar in the store?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
I advise you to pay attention to several important aspects. First, try playing on different models. Check the comfort of the neck: it should fit comfortably in your hand, and the strings should not burden your fingers too much. Also, carefully check the tool immediately, there should be no cracks or defects on it. And, of course, check the sound. the instrument should sound clear with all its strings.
– Is the guitar brand important?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
Of course, well-known brands such as Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez produce high-quality instruments. But that does not mean that only they deserve attention. Lesser known brands can also offer good models, especially for beginners. Priority should be given not to the brand, but to how well the given tool suits you.
– Which guitar would you recommend for a beginner to learn?
Yerem Malatchanyan.
I would recommend a classical guitar with nylon strings to start with. It is easier for beginners and allows you to develop technique without straining your hands. If you prefer modern music, you can start with an acoustic guitar. And for those who are already confident in their choice and want to dive into rock or jazz, they can consider the electric guitar.
